By Bryan Gapinski:  Brad Loyet scored his fifth straight Badger Midget Series victory, Sunday Night, capturing the 25-lap feature at Angell Park Speedway. The victory tied the all-time consecutive Badger Midget feature victory mark, for the 21-year old Missouri driver. Aaron Fiscus jumped into the lead at the start (actually coming out of two...we managed to get a jump - first time of the night - from the pole.  Went through the middle of the track and led the BMARA feature field through turn one!  I left too much room on both sides, and all the top dogs got by going down the back straight though-JD), with Loyet improving four positions on the opening lap moving into fourth place. Second place running Bubba Altig slowed on the third lap, bringing out the caution. Fiscus paced two more laps before Loyet took the lead, one lap later Fiscus spun running in second position. Loyet continued his advantage, while fast qualifier Scott Hatton and Mike Hess waged a torrid battle for second place behind Loyet during the middle stages of the event. Hatton regained the second position and closed slightly on Loyet, when the event's fifth caution appeared, with two laps remaining. Hatton challenged Loyet on the restart, with Hess making a great pass for the runner-up position on the final lap. Loyet driving the Loyet Motorsports owned Spike/Ford-Esslinger No. 05, finished 1.1 seconds ahead of Hess, followed by Hatton, Chad DeSelle and Matt Smith.
Hatton who earlier in the evening won the $750 Dash for Cash event holds a 23-point advantage over Loyet heading into the next series event on July 3 "The Mid State Equipment Sue Thiel Memorial" at Dodge County Fairgrounds (Beaver Dam, Wis.). A victory in the Dodge County race would give Loyet six straight series feature victories establishing the longest streak in the 73-year history of the organization. The series will complete the two-race weekend at Angell Park Speedway on July 5. In the Angell Park event Loyet will be seeking his fifth straight victory at the track, three short of the record co-held by Billy Johnson and Stan Fox.

Cars Present: 17   -    Feature Lap Leaders: Fiscus 1-5, Loyet 6-25.

After a little more than normal maintenance/inspection this week, we still managed to arrive before the qualifying draw!  There were only 16 other cars and the track seemed drier than last week, with a strong wind blowing through.  Weather.com predicted the storm that came through the Stateline area Saturday night, was set to go over Angell Park too.  I am not sure if they did get any rain or not, but the track workers almost spent an extra hour packing it in.

Hot Laps:  We hung kind of close behind Matt Smith in “Hawk house car”, and actually did run the car into the corners as hard as I should be.  It still seemed to me like the track was going to be very dry slick though, so I conferred with “tireman” Dwight Steffan and decided to drop the RR torsion bar back down to what I thought was a successful run the week before.  That was pretty much the only change we made.

Qualifying:  After a less than ideal start (not only did the notorious take-off issue seem to re-appear tonight, the car is very poor on the initial start too), I finally got up to speed down the back straight.  Went into three poorly though on the way to the green.  The first lap was terrible (I should have learned the normal “qualifying low line” going through three and four was not good) and the second lap was just a little better.  At least I felt that my mental state was up to the deal, but maybe my actual driving talent was just not enough.  Contemplating the run post-qualifying, I wonder (if anything), maybe I charged the corner in too much and could have let the car set a little better for the track conditions.  Dwight offered that maybe we should not have run that bar on this night.  (Like I mentioned though-never “blogged” it though-we had a good run last week going back to that set-up…gotta love dirt racing…track changes every week).

Heat:  Started on the outside front row (kind of our theme for the last month or so).  Although I have been impressed with the starts since Wilmot the middle of June, I and the car did not take off like we should have.  Polesitter Dick Kaiser got the jump on me going in to one, and his engine shot oil all over my face shield coming out of two.  I gave up a bunch of ground anyway and fell to the back.  There was an early race caution (eventually Dick’s ride gave up) and I was able to get my head into things.  Eventually got a rhythm going and even moved up higher on the track, as it appeared the rest of the  field was too.  Towards the end of the race, I hit the turn three cushion and the car got up off all four wheels (last week, I swear I almost flipped three times).  Thinking that bar was too soft, I basically just brought the car home.  Managed to finish 6th though, so that secured a spot for us in the four car qualifying race.

The way the qualifying times worked out, started on the front row!
